Christmas at Pulmans Steel has changed dramatically over the years

Chatting to David Shoesmith our current MD about Christmas over the years reminds him of times when his father was MD and the run up to Christmas was all about stocktaking.

In those days, Pulmans had no in-house processing services so stocktaking was simply a process of walking around with a clipboard and counting lengths of steel. David remembers joining his dad and the rest of the team in the build up to the festive season. Although a cold and laborious task, the thought of the Christmas period, surrounded by family and friends made for a great atmosphere.

The run up to Christmas 2018 at Pulmans still involves stocktaking but our in-house processing services including profiling, sawing and machining has made stocktaking a more complex proposition. These days we need to include lengths and off cuts but with our ERP system - analysis, logging and calculating stock has been made so much quicker and easier.

Today the pace of industry is much faster than in David’s dad day, and so in December we encourage customers to place their orders early. This ensures that deliveries can be made before Christmas or customers can have their material as soon as they return in the New Year.

We also filter in the joy of Northern England Weather! Santa may enjoy the snow but there are times we find it a challenge. Saying that even during last years ‘The Beast from the East” we delivered 100% of orders, evidence of our Great Yorkshire determination!

Hopefully by the 21st of December all orders will be dispatched, stock will be logged and we can gather together, eat mince pies and reflect on the last year. The 21st of December is our last working day and we re-open on the 2nd of January 2019.

From all the team we wish you a Christmas full of laughter and peace and a very Happy New Year.
