Improving Safety: The Importance of Open Steel Flooring

Open steel flooring creates a durable, safe, non-slip surface for a wide range of industrial applications. From elevated walkways to platforms and stairs, our steel open grid flooring reduces the risk of accidents, falls, and other hazards.

What is open steel flooring?

Open steel flooring is made from rectangular mild steel sections with a high performance-to-weight ratio, acting as a weight bearer, there is then steel bars running perpendicular which are welded to the individual sections. Our steel open grid flooring is cost-effective and versatile, so it is ideal for use both inside and outside of industrial and commercial buildings. The gaps between the steel allow for airflow that aids in heat exchange and ventilation, create a non-slip surface, and ensure that no puddles can form as liquid passes directly through the gaps in the sections.

What is open steel flooring used for?

Steel open flooring is used extensively in industrial and commercial buildings. It has numerous applications and is used in the design and manufacture of walkways, ramps, raised platforms, and mezzanine floors. It can also be used over existing flooring to create a non-slip surface with easy drainage.

Open steel flooring creates a safe access route in hazardous industrial buildings with a high risk of slips and falls. It also allows for good ventilation, ensuring airflow is not blocked or restricted. This is especially important in high-heat areas or when chemicals are in use. This type of flooring is typically installed near machinery or in areas where hazardous work occurs.

Advantages of open steel flooring

Open steel flooring has a number of pros, making it advantageous to use in industrial and commercial buildings.

These benefits include:

Open steel flooring is easy to keep clean.
The gaps in the mesh ensure liquid does not pool and create hazardous puddles.
Mesh provides a non-slip surface that creates a safer walkway.
Airflow is unimpeded and ventilation is not restricted.
Steel open grid flooring is modular so it’s easy to lay, reconfigure, or repair.
Open steel flooring is anti-corrosion if it’s galvanized. However, it’s worth noting that if the flooring is self-colour, then there’s a chance it could corrode.
Suitable for indoor and outdoor industrial use.

Why is open steel flooring important to meet safety standards?

Industrial safety standards dictate that non-slip flooring is in use in hazardous areas and that ventilation or airflow is not impeded, especially in environments where chemicals are in use. The use of open steel flooring adheres to these standards and ensures that a safe passage exists for all workers.

When in use overhead, all steel open grid flooring in the UK and EU must also adhere to the British Standards (BS) for ballproofing. These standards require that the maximum openings for working platforms or flooring do not allow a ball with a diameter of 35mm to fall through. For floorings above workspaces, the maximum openings must not allow a ball with a diameter of 20mm to fall through.

Make your industrial workspace safer with steel mesh flooring

Steel mesh flooring is practical, cost effective and versatile, making it ideal for every industrial environment. It increases your safety rating and ensures you comply with the expected safety standards. Pulmans stocks a range of perforated planks and other industrial walkway and handrail products ideally suited for use in warehouses, factories, manufacturing plants and other similar environments.
