Serving a range of end uses

steel industry manufacturing

Here at Pulman Steel we are delighted that our customer base is diverse, and our steel is used in some pretty impressive end uses.

Although only serving the North of England, the area is known as a powerhouse for manufacturing, construction, transport and much more.

A large amount of steel is used within the construction industry where steel is a great product to build sustainable structures quickly. But any industry that has steel as a key element in its products or processes needs the services, reliability and expertise of a supplier who can support their diverse needs quickly and efficiently, and that is us here at Pulman Steel.

Supplying to the transport and infrastructure sector is also something we do on a weekly basis. Steel provides properties such as elasticity, strength and ductility, properties necessary for use in bridges, road side reinforcement and tunnels.

These properties of steel are also beneficial to many other industries including the energy generating sector where its use is essential for quarrying, resource extraction, electricity pylons and wind turbines.

There are not many alternatives to steel that are as cost effective whilst providing strength, flexibility and long product lifecycles. Steel plays an invaluable role in nearly every aspect of day to day life and will continue to do so long into the future.

Spend a day with Steve...

Steve Makinson is our Sales Manager. Steve has been a part of the Pulman Steel team for 19 years.

His job is extremely varied, and he loves to talk about steel as much as he can. He is a big fan of his sales team being pro-active and loves the sound of a busy office.

Steve is an avid fan of music and theatre, a keen golfer trying to get back to single figures, and a huge Leeds United supporter having been a season ticket holder for longer than he can remember.

Spend a day with Steve....

6.30am - The alarm goes and I dive out of bed, a quick shower and on the road to the office at 7.15am.

8.00am - At my desk and raring to go, with a quick pot of fruit and yoghurt for breakfast. I have a brief scan through all of my emails, and make sure that all our wagons are loaded and ready deliver our steel to the large number of customers who are eagerly awaiting delivery. Some mornings I have to liaise with the customer services department to arrange a last minute delivery to help out a customer in need.

8.30am - I update the daily sales figures on our office whiteboard so everyone know how the month is progressing, and check the delivery status of the fittings and machining work we have to process.

9.00am - The sales team are at their desks and the phones have started ringing with customers enquiring for prices and placing orders. Emails are also coming in thick and fast so it looks like it is going to be another busy day in Pulmansland.

10.00am - It’s always good to communicate with Clive and Nathan to ensure that the profile and sawing departments are running smoothly so customers always get their supplies when needed. There are always lots of orders to process and we might need to juggle things around to make sure we get everything ready for our customers when they need it, but they are on top of things so no need to panic – just yet!!

11.00am - I have been pro-active this morning and spoken to various customers about their machining requirements. This has proved a positive move as I win an order to profile, drill and countersink several parts that they used to machine in-house – success!!

12.30pm - Time to snatch a bit of lunch and go for a walk along the canal so I am fresh and ready for the afternoon’s challenges – and I have to get my steps in for the day of-course.

2.00pm - I have been back from lunch for a while now so I check the days sales figures and so far so good. I know it will get busier as the afternoon progresses, and our customers love that we are open until 5.15pm to take orders for stock for a next day delivery.

3.30pm - This afternoon one of the team won a large beam order from a new customer which included the use of our new on wagon crane offloading facility. The crane really helps our responsibility to our drivers and our customer’s safety when they are off loading heavy beams.

4.30pm - This is the time to check that all our orders are on screen and being picked, packed and made ready to be loaded for delivery tomorrow, we want to keep all our customers happy and impressed with our service.

5.15pm - The days sales are finished so I scan through my diary ensuring everything needed to be done is ticked off and I have a clean start in the morning.

5.30pm - Final checks with the transport department and credit control, then lock up and head off home, another very busy day at Pulmans under my belt.

The evening could be singing rehearsal (did you guess this would be one of his hobbies), golf, or football!

Christmas at Pulmans Steel has changed dramatically over the years

Chatting to David Shoesmith our current MD about Christmas over the years reminds him of times when his father was MD and the run up to Christmas was all about stocktaking.

In those days, Pulmans had no in-house processing services so stocktaking was simply a process of walking around with a clipboard and counting lengths of steel. David remembers joining his dad and the rest of the team in the build up to the festive season. Although a cold and laborious task, the thought of the Christmas period, surrounded by family and friends made for a great atmosphere.

The run up to Christmas 2018 at Pulmans still involves stocktaking but our in-house processing services including profiling, sawing and machining has made stocktaking a more complex proposition. These days we need to include lengths and off cuts but with our ERP system - analysis, logging and calculating stock has been made so much quicker and easier.

Today the pace of industry is much faster than in David’s dad day, and so in December we encourage customers to place their orders early. This ensures that deliveries can be made before Christmas or customers can have their material as soon as they return in the New Year.

We also filter in the joy of Northern England Weather! Santa may enjoy the snow but there are times we find it a challenge. Saying that even during last years ‘The Beast from the East” we delivered 100% of orders, evidence of our Great Yorkshire determination!

Hopefully by the 21st of December all orders will be dispatched, stock will be logged and we can gather together, eat mince pies and reflect on the last year. The 21st of December is our last working day and we re-open on the 2nd of January 2019.

From all the team we wish you a Christmas full of laughter and peace and a very Happy New Year.

A Wide Range of Steel Machining Capabilities

Dah Lih machine

What’s new at Pulmans? Well we have expanded our steel processing capabilities yet again – this time to include a full range of steel machining services. Along with our existing facilities for steel profiling and sawing, we can now provide services in drilling, tapping, counter-sinking, notching, machining and milling.

The combination of our high definition profiling capabilities and this new Machining Centre allow us to deliver an increased level of complexity with steel profiles, precisely matching customer specified designs and requirements.

This is all made possible with our new Dah Lih Vertical Machining Centre – an elaborate piece of equipment designed for machining steel on a working surface measuring 1020mm by 510mm.

Using 24 different computer-controlled machining tools, our highly skilled operators can also use this versatile machine to cut holes and slots into bespoke lengths of our flat bar, angles, RHS, channels and more, providing they are within the machine’s capabilities.

With the addition of our Machining Centre, Pulmans is now a real one-stop-shop for all your steel needs. Whether you need off-the-shelf, sawn, profiled or machined steel products, we can process and deliver all the steel you need for your project – streamlining your procurement process and saving you valuable time.

We can process up to 30 tonnes of bespoke steel orders each day!

steel cutting

We all know that steel is renowned for its incredible strength, but while this is great when it comes to finished products, it can make fabricating steel goods quite difficult. The only real effective way to cut steel is with specialised tools, so it will certainly make your steel construction project a lot easier if it’s accurately sawn or profiled to your specifications before you receive it.

If you’re familiar with our work at Pulmans, then you’ll know that we're known for being dependable and consistent when it comes to sawing and profiling steel to order. Our sawing and profiling machines are not only exceptionally accurate, but they also have the capacity to process enough steel to meet the demands of almost any project our customers embark on. Regardless of our impressive processing capacity, however, our team at Pulman Steel are always just as happy to meet the needs of customers with smaller steel projects, while offering the same great service our customers have come to expect from us.

If you're wondering just how much steel we're talking, our facilities now have the capacity to process up to 30 tonnes of bespoke cut steel each day on our sawing and profiling machines. That means with the combined strength of our state-of-the-art sawing and profiling equipment and our team of highly trained operators, we are always fully equipped and ready to process both large and small orders of bespoke cut steel to exact customer specifications.

When you put together our bespoke steel processing with our off-the-shelf steel, there’s a total of 12,000 tonnes (and counting) that gets shipped out to our customers every year. No matter which way you look at it, that's a lot of metal!

Looking back on 2016

David Shoesmith with Jeremy Corbyn

Pulman Steel

Well the year is almost over, and what an eventful year it’s been! While the last twelve months has certainly thrown us some challenges, we are pleased to say we can mark 2016 off as a good year for Pulmans.

As we’ve been looking back over this eventful year, we had a few visitors pop in to relive 2016 with us. MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Holly Lynch paid us a visit to talk about the challenges we faced following last year’s Boxing Day floods – particularly the issues we have faced renewing our flood insurance.

Thanks in part to our substantial new flood defences, not only have we recovered from near disaster; we have bounced back stronger and better than ever!

We celebrated our revival with July’s Back and Better Event, when we threw a fantastic get-together complete with drinks, whole roasted hogs, a remote control racing track and tours of our factory showcasing our new state-of-the-art machinery.

We truly believe that adversity breeds strength, and when you’re in the steel business, strength is key.

As 2016 comes to a close, we’d like to thank all of our customers and suppliers for a great year, and we’d like to give a special thank you all to those who helped us in our recovery.
